PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
